So guys! Exciting times, I just came back from a steercom meeting and we actually decided to go live within a couple of days. The team is excited and a little bit scared but we feel comfortable that this will be a big success. For today's topic I thought we would discuss latency or lag, I mean what it is, how to keep track on it and what you can do to prevent it. So without further ado let's go talk to the king and prince of database architecture in Norway, Petter Minge and Ommund Øvrelid. So Petter, could you explain for a layman what latency actually is? Off course Rafael, in short latency is a measure of delay, so how fast the data travels on a round trip for example the time taken for information to get to its destination and back again if it takes a long time you have a high latency but if it's fast you have a low latency. Ah okay cool, so but why is latency so important to keep track on when it comes to the cloud? Well it's important to keep in mind in local environments as well, but in local environments the application and the database are usually quite close to each other and usually also have a low latency. This means that if something is triggered or sent from application to the database the response back in the application is quick. Furthermore the bigger the distance between the application and the database the higher the latency can be. So, then the user experience will not be so good, the more efficient the route is the better it is. Ah okay, but I'll turn to you Ommund, can't we just put everything in one big cloud? Oh yes Rafael, the best theoretical solution is to have one perfect cloud where you have all the optimized technologies and services, databases and applications, but that cloud does not still exist. Our experience is that most of the time windows applications and services will be optimized in Azure and Oracle services and databases and applications will be optimized in Oracle cloud, therefore a multi-cloud solution will often be the best way forward, where you can pick and choose the best and cheapest technologies from another cloud vendor. Yeah okay cool, and the Microsoft and Oracle they have a new collaboration in the cloud right? Could you could you tell us a bit about that? Yes in 2019 Microsoft and Oracle entered a partnership, where they're facilitated for unified identity and access management an integrated and collaborative support model and a fast connect between the clouds for low latency. By using a fast connect between Oracle and Azure in the same region it is possible to reduce the latency between the cloud platforms to about one to two milliseconds. And that's quite fast. Cool, so when it comes to multi-cloud between Microsoft and Oracle we have the experience there's no problem there if you use the fast connect options between them right? Yeah, absolutely, we have had some experiences with project or customer projects where we see with a standard connection you have a latency for about around five to eight milliseconds and with a fast connect you decrease that latency to one to two milliseconds so there should be no problem with a multi-cloud environment with a fast connection. Cool, thank you guys talk to you later bye bye okay bye!
